So we all know that Philip Bloom has been busy reviewing the Canon 7D, and using it in his DSLR workshops. Well recently he’s been testing monitoring on the 7D, and let me tell you, you will crap your pants when I tell you how good it is! Read on for his explanation.
I also recently read a review by Naturfokus and their test with a beta model of the Canon 7D. The biggest thing they touched on was the surprisingly impressive image quality for a camera with an APS-C sensor (1.6x crop factor). All of their images turned out just as good as the 5D Mark II when the ISO was 800 and under. But even at ISO 1600, the images were amazingly good with very little image noise. Naturfokus was even kind enough to shoot a little video at 50p and slow it down for us to see how the slow mo looks.
So the original desire that many filmmakers wanted with their DSLR was XLR capability. Since that is what “the people” wanted to hear about, it’s what I went looking for. Well after some thought, and a load of interesting opinions, I’m updating our search to include all audio in general to cover all bases. Cool?
AlainP, over at Canon5DTips did a great job reporting on a handful of external audio devices that are worth mentioning. And since audio devices are as abundant as DSLR choices, it all really comes down to what you’ll be using it for…
One of the phrases that likes to be tossed around is: “Filmmakers should be used to using an external audio device anyways.” I agree, we are used to it. Does that mean we what to keep doing it that way? No, not really, syncing audio is a pain in the ass. Especially with DSLR video that wasn’t made to handle audio like a professional video camera does…
Do not buy a 7D yet! I REPEAT, do not buy a Canon 7D yet.
This is just in and it can only mean one thing.

Canon will challenge the Red camera…. most likely the Red Scarlett.
For those of you who don’t speak the native tongue of Sweden, let me translate.
Mark the calendar

- ala Canon Rumors
The box is draped in red. Coincidence? I think not… CORRECTION: Alain P from Canon 5d Tips pointed out that red is also Canon’s color… So the color of the draping is just a brand thing… OR maybe it’s also a sign of blood (because blood is red unless you’re Spock)… the blood to come between Canon and Red
“Canon will make one of its largest and most important launches in the company’s history?”
Umm… unless they’re launching a new lens that can also create Archimedes like death rays, I’m so sure that this must be a new video DSLR camera that will just blow us the hell away. I just have a gut feeling about it… it’s so strong… (but when I was five I also had a gut feeling that Pee Wee Herman would be president… didn’t turn out that way… Or maybe it did?)
Whatevs…This fall RED and Canon will go head to head. Who will win?
More reporting to come. STAY TUNED
We’re a little late on this meme… but in our defense it feels like a new Hitler Downfall video is coming out every week.
If you’re reading all the camera blogs, then you know what we’ve already known for the last couple of weeks.
-There is a camera called the 7D
- It’s gonna blow our minds (biblically)
- I made a diagram of what it means

Ok, so we all know how amazing The RED One camera is, and the massive crater is has left in the filmmaking industry. When it was introduced a few years back, it dominated the market and blew the sides off the Hollywood studio system.
Then, in the last year, the filmmaking industry was changed again! An amazing influx of DSLR still cameras with video capability left filmmakers awe struck and astounded at the amazing quality, the leader of which was the one and only Canon 5D Mark II.
Now, as we steadily cruise to the year 2010, we are at the dawn of “high quality, low cost” cameras that will, in my opinion, leave a permanent ripple in the industry from here on out. The most notable of those cameras? Why of course the Canon 7D and the much anticipated RED Scarlet.
We have discovered recently a curious comparison between the Canon 5D and a prototype RED Scarlet that leads us to believe that even the “untouchable” RED company has been shakin’ in their boots about this DSLR revolution.
So, for everyone who wet their pants with the last post, don’t get too excited yet… Upon further research of the “leaked” specs, I’ve found a couple discrepancies that might make all us filmmakers out there reconsider the 7D afterall…
It is true that the new 7D will have Dual DIVIC IV processors, and for anyone who didn’t read the last post, that more than likely means SLOW MOTION! Or a least variable frame rates for video, which believe me, is worthy enough for pants wetting…
However, if you look closely at the picture to the LEFT, you will see it says the 7D will have a FULL FRAME CMOS SENSOR. Now if that’s true, we will all promptly pull our F-ing hair out and shoot ourselves for pre-maturely buying a 5D Mark II without doing our research…
The real story is; none of the sources I’ve been investigating can confirm that… In fact, most of them are saying the 7D will be a CROP SENSOR camera. If that’s the case, we can all write off the 7D now and continue on our way…
Well known cinematographer Rodney Charters has recently posted pictures and video for a promo shoot, unrelated apparently, to his usual gig, FOX TV series “24.” Himself and David Dadson from Panavision loaded up a Canon 5D Mark II with one massive Primo 11 to 1 Panavision zoom lens and took it for a spin.
They quickly noticed the PV to EOS mount they were using and the shear size of the lens was creating a “vignette” look the two of them were not expecting. With a little trial and error, they fixed the problem with 1.4 adapter that evened out the look.
Rodney did the honors of posting a TwitVid for our viewing pleasure. Too bad they didn’t actually shoot anything of significance… Watch it HERE
So if you are anything like me, it’s hard to keep up with slew of DSLRs that seem to be appearing every few months or so. I’ve decided to put together a list of the available DSLRs and their various price tags (again, if you are anything like me, price tag makes a big difference!). Having checked out a lot of the cameras out there, quality makes a big difference too, so I’ve organized them by HD quality for ease of eyes.

FULL HD (1920 x 1080)
Canon 5D Mark II - $2700 (body only)
Canon Rebel T1i - $900 (with 18-55mm IS lens)
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 - $1500 (with 14-140mm lens)
Nikon D400 - $? (releasing later this year)
Nikon D750 - $? (releasing later this year)
HD (1280 x 720)
Nikon D90 - $900 (body only)
Nikon D300s - $1800 (body only)
Nikon D5000 - $740 (body only)
Olympus E-P1 - $800 (with 14-42mm lens)
Pentax K7D - $? (releasing later this year)
Also, the next big rumor is that Canon will be releasing a new 1D DSLR that will fix the whole 24p issue that everyone has had with the 5D. Biggest downside? The cool $4000 price tag…
So over fourth of July we captured a ton of footage on the Canon 5d with our awesome Redrock Mount. Check out the footage.
