DEAD SEASON: ZOMBIES AND THE 7D

picture-1Makers of “Dead Season,” a new independent zombie flick currently in production, have snagged up the rights to it being the “first film shot on the Canon 7D.” Although the movie in still in the early stages of production, it appears to be shaping up well.

Up to this point, the camera of choice has always been the 5D Mark II for serious film productions, yet I believe we will start seeing more and more productions utilizing the 7D’s wider frame rate capabilities. Despite the smaller sensor, the 7D still turns out an amazing image and I’d say the real test to measure it’s performance is to see it on the big screen. Hopefully more movies like this will do that for us.

“Dead Season” has put out a selection of first week dailies to give us a taste of what they’ve achieved. Check it out below!

MY RANT AGAINST THE RED SCARLETT AND DSMC

dslrI was reading through Red’s literature again on the Scarlett camera and Mysterium Sensor.  I do this often because it feels like I never get enough Red news in my life.  But after reading for the 200th time, I still have some new thoughts.

Has RED no shame?!  I personally think the whole “DSMC” tag is a little dumb. “DSMC” stands for “Digital Stills and Motion Cinema.”

They’re making a DSLR-esque camera, but they want to call it something different that seems “more appropriate.”  Kinda like when scientists wanted to call the swine flu, H1N1.  I don’t buy it - it looks like transparent advertising to me.   I even started to imagine a conversation I would have with a tech yuppie at an Apple Store or some stupid bar in Williamsburg or both.

DSLR DESIRES: 2 OF 5 - DSLR AUDIO *UPDATE

So the original desire that many filmmakers wanted with their DSLR was XLR capability. Since that is what “the people” wanted to hear about, it’s what I went looking for. Well after some thought, and a load of interesting opinions, I’m updating our search to include all audio in general to cover all bases. Cool?

AlainP, over at Canon5DTips did a great job reporting on a handful of external audio devices that are worth mentioning. And since audio devices are as abundant as DSLR choices, it all really comes down to what you’ll be using it for…

One of the phrases that likes to be tossed around is: “Filmmakers should be used to using an external audio device anyways.” I agree, we are used to it. Does that mean we what to keep doing it that way? No, not really, syncing audio is a pain in the ass. Especially with DSLR video that wasn’t made to handle audio like a professional video camera does…

Here’s Some Options!

HITLER ÜBER PISSED ABOUT CANON 7D

We’re a little late on this meme… but in our defense it feels like a new Hitler Downfall video is coming out every week.

DSLR DESIRES: 1 OF 5 - PANAVISION LENS MOUNT

One very hot topic in the DSLR film world is the coveted PV to EOS lens mount (or Panavision to Canon). We’ve blogged about this before, but now we have a lot more information! In turn, now you will have more information!

As we have mentioned before, the fore runner of the PV to EOS mount is “24″ cinematographer Rodney Charters. Rodney and his crew have been working on a “unknown” promo shoot that I came to find out is called “Indian Gangster.” Check it out on Twitter! They have been busy mounting all kinds of lenses on a 5D.

Oh, but there’s more!!

5 THINGS I WANT FOR MY DSLR: AN ONGOING REPORT

With the introduction of a variety of DSLR cameras that support HD video, many companies have been on the fast track to get you the coolest, craziest, and cheapest accessories from your filmmaking needs. There are camera support rigs, dollies, adapters, viewfinders and countless other “additions” for productions of any type.

But as filmmakers, what do we want to see with our DSLRs? What have we been craving to see happen that would take our stories to the next level? Well, we have compiled a list of the top things filmmakers have been interested in:

1) The Panavision Lens Mount - We know it’s out there, but how does it work? How can we benefit?
2) XLR Inputs - Syncing audio can be a pain in the ass… What’s out there to help?
3) DSLR 3-D - Is it possible to shoot 3-D with DSLRs? Two of them together? We’ll find out for you.
4) Anamorphic Converter - Hollywood is doing it, why can’t we? Believe it, it is possible…
5) Underwater Housing - We’ll find the best one for your next James Cameron impersonation.

Join us for the next couple weeks as we investigate, probe, search, and ponder about how we can achieve these things and more to get us going on the DSLR revolution! Check back here and tell all your friends!

Check out the manual and see all the cool new features. The 7D is on the run.

MANUAL HERE

UPDATE*** Below

MY BIGGEST QUALM - So i’m flipping through the manual and I just happened upon page 177. My biggest qualm right now is that even though there is an HDMI out, I can’t view it on the LCD and a separate screen at the same time. Does anyone know a workaround? It would be nice to have a camera operator and an AC with their own screens to look at while shooting. Such a bummer.
