So we all know that Philip Bloom has been busy reviewing the Canon 7D, and using it in his DSLR workshops. Well recently he’s been testing monitoring on the 7D, and let me tell you, you will crap your pants when I tell you how good it is! Read on for his explanation.
I also recently read a review by Naturfokus and their test with a beta model of the Canon 7D. The biggest thing they touched on was the surprisingly impressive image quality for a camera with an APS-C sensor (1.6x crop factor). All of their images turned out just as good as the 5D Mark II when the ISO was 800 and under. But even at ISO 1600, the images were amazingly good with very little image noise. Naturfokus was even kind enough to shoot a little video at 50p and slow it down for us to see how the slow mo looks.
Today is our beloved Canon 5D Mark II’s 1st birthday! It was today one year ago that Canon released the info on the 5D Mark II and shocked the world with it’s amazing capabilities!
A quote from Canon:
“The anticipation surrounding the launch of this camera model has exceeded our greatest expectations, and we believe our loyal customers will be awed by the level of innovation and features built into the new EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR. Once they have the chance to experience the camera, we believe they will agree that it was worth the wait.”
It was worth the wait you amazing bastards! Thank you Canon for showing us the way!
Reasons why I love Canon:
-Kick ass cameras
-Amazing image quality
-THEY LISTEN TO US!
Canon wants to hear your feedback! And specifically about video for your DSLRs! Here’s our chance to make it happen! 24p for the 5D!

Child obesity and diabetes type 2 are a major problem in the US… Maybe instead of cutting cigarettes out of movies, Hollywood should think twice about casting obese children with a knack for comedy. Shame on the industry for making us think that it’s okay to be the fat kid if you’re funny. The only fat kid who’s famous now is Jerry O’Connell, and that’s because he lost the weight. Where the hell are Chunk, Ham Porter, and Thud Butt???
News about a Firmware version 1.1.4 for the 5D Mark II has surfaced over at CanonRumors.com and I for one couldn’t be more excited! For anyone who owns a 5D and has been following our blogs on the 7D, you know it would be really frickin’ nice if Canon would throw us a bone and give us 24p. Now, before I get ahead of myself, there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of information out about it yet… In fact, upon attempting to use my 2 years of high school French to translate the workflow, I’m still decently confused as to whether it’s showing an actual firmware update, or existing 5D footage is being conformed to 24/25p. To be honest, what intrigued me the most was the person using the 5D.
Jean-Jacques Annaud, French director extraordinaire (Director of “Enemy At The Gates,” “Seven Years In Tibet”) used a 5D Mark II recently as a B Cam on an “unknown” film and was gracious enough to take us through his workflow. This is where the frenzy started…
I was reading through Red’s literature again on the Scarlett camera and Mysterium Sensor. I do this often because it feels like I never get enough Red news in my life. But after reading for the 200th time, I still have some new thoughts.
Has RED no shame?! I personally think the whole “DSMC” tag is a little dumb. “DSMC” stands for “Digital Stills and Motion Cinema.”
They’re making a DSLR-esque camera, but they want to call it something different that seems “more appropriate.” Kinda like when scientists wanted to call the swine flu, H1N1. I don’t buy it - it looks like transparent advertising to me. I even started to imagine a conversation I would have with a tech yuppie at an Apple Store or some stupid bar in Williamsburg or both.
Looks like a Best Buy employ snapped a quick one with their iPhone.

The word on the street is that Best Buy will get their first shipment of Canon 7ds on October 11th… Though someone in the Netherlands is saying it could be shipping as soon as Sept 26th. That’d put it out just a few days before the big secret Sept. 29th announcement from Canon.
For anyone who is curious…
How does the Canon 7D compare to the gorgeousness of the 5D Mark II?
Here’s your answer. Plain and simple.

So the original desire that many filmmakers wanted with their DSLR was XLR capability. Since that is what “the people” wanted to hear about, it’s what I went looking for. Well after some thought, and a load of interesting opinions, I’m updating our search to include all audio in general to cover all bases. Cool?
AlainP, over at Canon5DTips did a great job reporting on a handful of external audio devices that are worth mentioning. And since audio devices are as abundant as DSLR choices, it all really comes down to what you’ll be using it for…
One of the phrases that likes to be tossed around is: “Filmmakers should be used to using an external audio device anyways.” I agree, we are used to it. Does that mean we what to keep doing it that way? No, not really, syncing audio is a pain in the ass. Especially with DSLR video that wasn’t made to handle audio like a professional video camera does…

As it seems, Canon likes to give road tests of their equipment by handing it’s cameras to people who will put them through the ringer. Of course, since the announcement of the Canon 7D, it’s been passed through several hands. One of which is Philip Bloom, a well known cinematographer, who also put the 5D Mark II and Panasonic GH1 to the test. His initial tests have all been about how it holds up to the 5D.
He’s figured out some pretty amazing stuff that should help everyone’s headaches go away… Or a least numb them.
