Have you ever been so engulfed in a science fiction world that you thought, “I never want this to end?” If you answered yes and you were watching Supernova, pat yourself on the back for being an idiot. As for everyone else, here are 5 movies that you might have been watching when you realized you wouldn’t mind investing more of your precious time in a fictional, technologically-advanced world.
1) District 9 - This film is the whole reason for even writing this list. In the first ten minutes, Blomkamp introduces us to a world with a rich history of alien-human diplomacy. We all know they’re gonna make a sequel, but why not create a spin-off TV show that deals with entirely different characters who live in the same world. The Sci-fi Channel really needs something sweet after losing BSG. WATCH
2) Children of Men - Picks up literally five minutes after the end of the movie.. I don’t want to drop any spoilers here, but there are infinite possibilities! Action! Drama! More babies!? WATCH
3) Deja Vu - Alright, so Deja Vu is not the best movie of all time, but this third pairing of Denzel Washington with director Tony Scott has a concept that is certainly interesting enough to carry a procedural series. The Pitch: The government has a special team of physicists and detectives who are able to see three and a half days into the past. Think along the lines of a U.S. Doctor Who… CSI:Time Travel? WATCH
4) Close Encounters - There has always been talk about an E.T. remake. Screw that. I want to see what happens after the credits roll on Close Encounters. We bring back Richard Dreyfuss, and it’s about his character, Roy, coming back with the aliens thirty years later. And I’m just spitballing here, BUT I say we get Aaron Sorkin to write the pilot and make ourselves an optimistic take on alien-human diplomacy. WATCH
5) Time Bandits - Easily one of the wackiest and weirdest sci-fi movies of all time, this show adaptation would be right at home on Adult Swim. More little people and more Napoleon! And Sean Connery only retired from movies, right? Maybe we can bring him back for TV. WATCH
*BONUS: Flight of the Navigator - How would you feel if you were abducted? Probably not good. How would you feel if you were returned? Probably alright. How would you feel if everyone else had aged 10 years and you hadn’t? WHOOOOAAAHHHH!!!! …. Okay, so it’s pretty much the plot of “The 4400,” but I love that scene in the Flight of The Navigator where they connect computers to David’s brain and find tons of star maps inside.
WATCH this clip. The good stuff starts around the five minute mark.
So the show would be “Chuck” meets “The 4400.” Could work, right?
WATCH THIS!
I’m so delighted you included Flight of the Navigator! Sure, it freaked the crap out of me as a little kid, but then I would keep watching it over and over…wonder where I put that vhs…
Yeah, the first act of FOTN is pretty genius. I vividly remember the scene where the kid goes back to his house and finds different people living in it. It was a terrifying idea that you could go for a walk in the wood and come back only to find your parents ten years older.
I’d like to see the movie revamped with that creepy feeling throughout it. The film gets sorta lame once Sarah Jessica Parker enters.
How about a trilogy?
Flight of the Navigator
Plight of the Navigator
Fight of the Navigator
